Cancer, Aging Population, Health Challenges in Cuba

Havana, Mar 22 (Prensa Latina) – Cancer is now the leading cause of death in Cuba, and along with assistance to an aging population, constitutes the two greatest challenges to the island’s public health system. This statement was made by Health Minister Dr. Roberto Morales Ojeda during a meeting with the press, in which he also stated that confronting non-transmissible chronic diseases and epidemic outbreaks are that ministry’s priority.

He indicated that the control and surveillance systems are being reinforced, and laboratories across the country have been strengthened to detect in a timely way any epidemiological situation in the region.

He further pointed out that the Ministry remains committed to increasing the quality of service and satisfaction of the population, through improvements in health care and the resolution of administrative and logistical problems at the institutional level, along with ensuring the sustainability and efficiency of the system.

Morales Ojeda talked of the importance of continuing to apply the clinical method, which has helped to reduce unnecessary costs and diagnostic tests, while maintaining health indicators.
