This, according to Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma) officials, speaking to the press at an event during which the key results of national environmental management efforts over the aforementioned period were presented.

It was also reported that 69% of the island’s forest lands are classified as either protected or conservation areas, especially in key water catchment zones, as part of the country’s efforts to better care for such a precious heritage.

Likewise, Citma officials noted that all actions to rehabilitate beaches have been successfully completed in line with the necessary quality standards, while some 55,000 hectares have benefited from the National Soil Improvement and Conservation Program.

The results of the initiative continue to be implemented around the country, with 158 soil conservation and protection sites currently in existence, including recent areas established in municipalities.

It was also announced that Sancti Spirítus will host the main commemoration of World Environment Day (June 5), while Villa Clara, Ciego de Ávila, and Cienfuegos were recognized as outstanding provinces for their work in this regard.
