(Granama International) – Upon arriving in Cuba for his first official visit as President of El Salvador, yesterday May 26, Salvador Sánchez Cerén emphasized the solidarity and support shown his country by the Cuban people. He was received at Havana’s José Martí International Airport by Rogelio Sierra, Cuban deputy minister of Foreign Relations.
Speaking to the press at, Sánchez said he was making the visit to “continue deepening the interaction between Cuban and El Salvador,” while extending heartfelt greetings from the Salvadoran people to Fidel and Raúl.
He recalled that this coming June 1, the two countries will celebrate six years of a renewed relationship which includes a broad program of technical and scientific assistance on the part of Cuba. Health and education also figure prominently in cooperative efforts.
Since 1992, when Cuba’s medical collaboration began in El Salvador, more than 600 Cuban professionals have offered their services there, while 1,207 Salvadoran students have graduated from Cuban universities.
Sánchez Cerén served as Vice President during the first FMLN administration (2009-2014) and was elected President last year. His current term continues through May of 2019.
