Cuba Hosts International Forum for the Elimination of Foreign Military Bases

Guantanamo, Cuba, (acn) – The easternmost Cuban city of Guantanamo will host the Third International Seminar for Peace and for the Elimination of Foreign Military Bases, November 18th to the 20th.

With some one hundred delegates from several countries, the meeting will become a new scenario of support for Cuba in its demand that the United States gives back the territory it has occupied by force for over a century.

The Guantanamo Naval Base is the only military facility that the US Government operates in a country with which it does not have diplomatic relations. It represents a clear violation of international law and its territory must be returned to Cuba, the island’s authorities have repeatedly claimed.
According to PL news agency, the meeting will include a visit to the small community of Caimanera, the closest Cuban village to the military base, where the final declaration of the meeting will be proclaimed.

Last October, an Academic Workshop was held in Havana with the participation of high-level experts, who discussed the issue and concluded that the US Naval Base in Guantanamo violates the integrity and national sovereignty of Cuba.

In the twenty year period from 1959 to 1979, almost 12 thousand 670 violations of Cuban sovereignty and other aggressive actions from the U.S. military base were recorded and documented.

The US has occupied that base since the beginning of the Twentieth Century initially without the expressed agreement of Cuba and later on against the express will of the Cuban nation.
